What Are The Chances of Getting Pregnant After a Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation is one of the four forms of birth control. Also known as “tube tied“, tubal ligation functions as a prevention of the eggs from entering the uterus. It involves cutting and tying off the fallopian tubes. Tubal ligation is considered as one of the most effective form of birth control. Though there is a surgery that can reverse the process, the reversal process does not guarantee the probability of getting pregnant.

As mentioned, tubal ligation is one of the most effective ways to stop childbirth however there are still chances of getting pregnant after being operated for tubal ligation. There are records of pregnancy rates of women who were ligated but were able to conceive. After a year, there is a rate of 1/1000 and 2-10/1000 after five years. Unfortunately, if pregnancy is to occur for a woman who underwent tubal ligation, there is a high chance of getting ectopic pregnancy.

The risk of pregnancy after tubal ligation differs depending on the age of the girl. If you are below 28 years old, there is a 5 percent chance of you to get pregnant. If you are in the age of 28-33, the pregnancy probability lowers down to 2 percent and if you are older than 34 years old, then there is only one percent chance for you to conceive a baby. In some cases, and a very rare one, some women have found out of their pregnancy after they got tubal ligation since the fertilized egg may have been already implanted in the uterus even before the procedure of getting the ligation. Because of this, some women opt to do the procedure after giving birth or after the menstrual period where pregnancy risk is lower than the usual. The pregnancy after tubal ligation is possible because of some factors. The pregnancy could be because the tubes have grown together or a new passage has been formed through which the egg can be fertilized by the sperm, medical malpractice in which the tubal ligation was not done correctly and lastly if the woman was already pregnant prior to the operation which was also mentioned earlier.

Pregnancy after tubal ligation is not guaranteed, but there is always hope. Also, there is an operation developed wherein the surgery done for tubal ligation is reversed. This procedure is used to reconnect the fallopian tubes that were earlier cut. These surgeries have success rates of 25 to 80%. However, as tubal ligation increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy, the reversal of the said procedure also increases the chances of an ectopic pregnancy.
